Community volunteers will clean, plant, mulch and improve neighborhood tree boxes, with opportunities for residents and businesses to adopt tree boxes along Georgia Avenue
WASHINGTON — Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1E (ANC 1E) is inviting residents to roll up their sleeves and join neighbors for Neighborhood Beautification Day on Saturday, August 29, at 11 a.m. at Bruce Monroe Park. Neighbors may get more information and register to participate at ANC1E.org/NB26.
The community volunteer event will focus on improving neighborhood tree boxes through planting, mulching, weeding, litter and debris removal, and other cleanup work. No gardening experience is required, and volunteers can choose from a variety of activities based on their experience and comfort level.
“This is a simple way for neighbors to come together, meet one another and make an immediate, visible difference in our community,” said ANC 1E Vice Chair Audra Grant (1E02), who is spearheading the event. “You do not need to be an experienced gardener to help. We want everyone who cares about the neighborhood to feel welcome to pitch in, and hopefully we can turn one day of service into more residents, businesses and organizations taking ownership of tree boxes and blocks along Georgia Avenue throughout the year.”
Residents registering for the event can identify a specific tree box they would like volunteers to improve and indicate the types of work they are comfortable performing. Participants who have gardening tools available may also let organizers know what they can bring, although bringing tools is not required.
“Whether you can help for two minutes or two hours, we need you,” said ANC 1E Chair Josh Jacobson (1E06). “We’ll have activities for all ages, skill levels, and abilities. And this is about more than cleaning up the neighborhood. It’s a chance to meet your neighbors, spend some time together, and build the relationships that make our community stronger. If we can make the neighborhood look a little better and make life a little harder for the rats at the same time, that’s a pretty good Saturday.”
ANC 1E is also using the event to connect with residents, businesses, and community organizations interested in adopting a block or tree box along Georgia Avenue for continued maintenance and beautification. Residents who cannot participate on August 29 can still register their interest in future volunteer opportunities and submit ideas for additional neighborhood service projects.
Neighborhood Beautification Day will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, at Bruce Monroe Park. If significant rain prevents the event from taking place Saturday, it will be moved to Sunday, August 30, at 11 a.m.
Advance registration is encouraged to help organizers plan volunteer assignments, tools and supplies.
