Funds will help ensure this annual tradition on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home succeeds
WASHINGTON — Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1E unanimously approved a $1,000 community grant application from Friends of the Soldiers Home (FOSH) to support its upcoming Fall Fest, a neighborhood tradition that brings together neighbors, veterans, and the beautiful setting of the Armed Forces Retirement Home. The grant will cover part of the rental cost for the large tent that anchors the festival’s stage and community activities.
“Fall Fest brings neighbors and veterans together on the beautiful grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home to celebrate community and honor those who served,” said ANC 1E Chairman Brian Footer (1E07). “Thank you to the Home’s residents for welcoming the public, and to Friends of the Soldiers Home and the volunteers who make this treasured tradition a success each year. We are pleased to do our small part to help keep it strong.”
This year’s Fall Fest will be held Saturday, September 27, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the Home’s grounds, featuring live music, food trucks, activities for children, and space for neighbors to walk, bike, and enjoy one of the city’s most unique green spaces. The event draws hundreds of community members and veterans each year. For more information, visit https://www.friendsofsoldiers.org/events.
“Friends of the Soldiers Home is extremely grateful for the support of ANC 1E, a partnership that goes back years,” said John Hughes, chairman of FOSH. “This assistance is vital to carry out our mission to connect the community and the Home, for the benefit of both.”
ANC 1E approved the grant at its Sept. 24, 2025, general body meeting. Commissioners gather each month for a public meeting to conduct business and to hear residents’ issues and concerns. Meeting dates, times, and agendas are available at http://www.anc1e.org. ANC 1E’s grant program supports community-based organizations that deliver a clear public benefit to residents of the Commission area.
